The future's in safe hands

Two creatives from our Manchester team, Rob Helsby and Lisa Dale, discuss their experience working with design and advertising students at UCEN Manchester.


Giving something back to our communities matters a great deal to us at AmazeRealise. We’ve recently had the pleasure to work with the next generation of creatives in Manchester who are currently learning their craft.

And we can exclusively report that the creative business is safe in the hands of this next generation. The second year design and advertising students at UCEN Manchester have shown us that the talent that will be flooding into agencies in the near future is just as good as ever.


Setting a challenge

We have a long relationship with UCEN Manchester and include a number of their alumni in our team. Our work with the students began with an afternoon of presentations at the AmazeRealise Manchester office when we talked about our clients, the work we produce for them, and our working practices.

We then presented two design briefs using a fictitious brand called ‘SafetyNet’, a charity organisation that offered support to young people suffering from cyberbullying.

We asked the students to create an advertising campaign for the charity, raising awareness amongst the target audience. We also introduced the students to new ways of thinking and new software and asked them to design a responsive landing page for SafetyNet that connected with the first brief. With only six weeks to respond per brief, our aim was to start getting them used to the fast pace of industry.

The students were given a stripped back Brand Guidance document so they could focus on the task at hand than just thinking about logo, colours etc.  

Brilliant response

After six weeks, and a workshop on audience psychology and UX, the ideas were presented back to us. The students were daunted by the task at first, but took to it really well. We were blown away by the diversity and quality of the responses and it was an amazing feeling to see how each had interpreted the brand toolkit we gave them.

It’s easy to take our skills and experience for granted as we hurtle through the astral planes of agency life. But we found the whole experience highly rewarding. It was amazing to share knowledge with the students and see them grow and develop over such a short space of time. It also allowed us to take a step back and appreciate how far we’ve come in our own careers. 

The biggest takeaway we drew from the experience is that we should embrace he next generation because they have more than enough talent to succeed. The future’s in safe hands.
